When Tesla opened orders for the Model Y Performance in Canada late last year, there was an air of excitement. Early buyers were given delivery estimates as early as February, but as time passed, the optimism began to wane.
Over the past few days, multiple Canadian customers have shared their stories with us. One reader from Edmonton, who ordered the Quicksilver model with a white interior, saw their delivery window move from March to as late as mid-July. Another buyer in Vancouver experienced a similar delay, with their delivery date pushed from February-April to May-July.
Delays: A Growing Concern
These delays are not isolated incidents. We've received numerous reports from across the country, indicating a broader issue with Model Y Performance deliveries in Canada. While Tesla has remained tight-lipped about the cause, we can speculate that it's a complex interplay of production priorities and supply chain logistics.
The Impact of Tariffs and Production Shifts
After facing 25% tariffs on U.S.-built cars, Tesla made a strategic move. They switched from importing the Model Y from the U.S. to Germany, which resulted in a significant price drop for Canadian customers. However, this change required resetting production queues and re-certifying configurations, adding complexity to an already intricate process.
Additionally, the shift to importing from Germany introduces new challenges. International shipping adds weeks to the transit time and creates bottlenecks at various stages, from homologation to port processing and inland transport. Even small production delays can result in significant delivery setbacks by the time vehicles reach Canadian cities like Toronto and Vancouver.
There's also the possibility that Tesla is considering a pivot from Giga Berlin to Giga Shanghai due to Canada's decision to drop tariffs on Chinese-made EVs. However, this theory is complicated by the fact that Giga Shanghai is not currently producing the Model Y Performance.

Tesla's website continues to display delivery estimates for new orders between March and April 2026, but as existing customers have discovered, these timelines are not reflective of the current situation.
