Ethiopia and Eritrea Border Crisis: What's Happening? (2026)

Tensions Rise as Ethiopia Accuses Eritrea of Aggression and Demands Troop Withdrawal – Could This Spark a New Conflict?

Just hours ago, Ethiopia issued a bold demand to its neighbor Eritrea: pull back your troops from what it claims is Ethiopian territory. But here’s where it gets controversial – Ethiopia’s foreign minister didn’t stop at the demand. In a letter to his Eritrean counterpart, he accused Eritrea of “outright aggression,” alleging joint military exercises with Ethiopian rebels in the north and supplying them with weapons. Eritrea has yet to respond, but this isn’t the first time they’ve denied crossing the shared border.

The history between these two nations is fraught with tension, dating back to Eritrea’s independence from Ethiopia three decades ago. And this is the part most people miss – the 1998-2000 border war that claimed over 100,000 lives. A peace deal was signed, but it was never fully implemented. Relations only thawed in 2018 when Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, later awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, visited Eritrea’s capital, Asmara. Yet, despite their alliance during Ethiopia’s recent civil war, where Eritrea backed Ethiopian forces against Tigrayan rebels, the relationship has soured once more.

Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos claims, “Recent developments show Eritrea has chosen the path of escalation.” He points to Eritrean troops allegedly advancing further into northeastern Ethiopia and conducting joint maneuvers with rebel groups in the northwest, labeling these actions not just provocations but acts of aggression.

One of the sticking points? Landlocked Ethiopia’s desperate call for access to the sea, which Abiy has called an existential issue. He’s even described losing a port due to Eritrean independence as a “mistake.” Timothewos suggests that if Eritrea withdraws its troops, talks could begin, including discussions on sea access through the port of Assab.

But the tension doesn’t end there. Last week, Abiy made a shocking revelation: during the 2020-2022 Tigray civil war, Eritrean troops massacred civilians in the Ethiopian city of Aksum. Eritrea has denied these claims, but the allegation adds another layer to the deteriorating relationship.

Now, Ethiopia accuses Eritrea of supporting Tigrayan rebels opposed to the peace deal that ended the civil war. Eritrea fired back, accusing Ethiopia of fabricating excuses to justify a war it’s been eager to start for years. Is this the beginning of another conflict, or can diplomacy prevail? What’s your take? Let’s discuss in the comments – do you think these tensions will escalate, or is there room for resolution?
